Summer 2018 Music Camps at VMS!
Summer gives kids the chance to try new things and expand on what we learn throughout the year. This summer we'll offer a wide range of camps for students to go more in-depth with music!
Our week-long camps are limited to small groups of students who work closely with their faculty coach and give a culminating performance for their family and friends.
We coordinate to combine campers of similar ages, skill levels and interests.
Camps are offered weekly from June 25th - August 31st
To enroll, simply follow the links with each description.
Rock, Jazz and Pop camps
Students will jam out together, write their own songs and learn classic and current hits. Campers can play any instrument or sing. Each week includes group rehearsals, individual coaching and sessions that cover important topics that are rarely taught like, mic technique, holding down a groove and adding your signature touch to a well-known song.
Chamber Music Camp
Coached by VMS strings faculty Amali Premawardhana (MM Manhattan School of Music) and woodwinds faculty Chris Buechler (MM Eastman School of Music) students will form chamber ensembles and perform repertoire suited to their level and interest. To culminate the week, they perform for family and friends. The week will also include a special master class by distinguished pianist [asdfasdfa]
Lead by our voice teacher Sarah Partridge with support from Michael Kern, this camp presents students with the full range of classic American (and even international) vocal styles - from Broadway and jazz to the blues, classical and country - and shows their influence popular songs today. Students collaborate as well as develop solo performances.
Indian-Western Fusion Camp
VMS faculty member Andrew Shantz performs and teaches both jazz and Hindustani classical vocal music and will conduct this camp for students of a range of levels, interested learning how these styles of music and be blended. Two special rhythm workshops will also be conducted by Suryaksha Deshpande. Students will learn how Indian ragas can be woven into Western harmony and vice versa.
Electronic Music Camp
Campers compose their own songs and also perform together in a group using different electronic instruments. All skill levels are welcome since electronic instruments afford many options. Students learn how to construct songs and also how to synthesize their own original sounds.
VMS' summer percussion camp will give drummers a chance to sharpen their skills and learn new ways to groove. Coached by VMS faculty and Sabian and Vic Firth artist Jon Lango, this camp will also feature workshops on Latin percussion by Gabriel Globus-Hoenich and Indian rhythm by Andrew Shantz. Students will create a piece of music together during the week and perform for their family and friends!
